Week Two: Become the Change You Wish to See
To summarize the teachings in BUS 374 this week, there was lot of information about normal people can contribute to social innovation. Within social innovation, there are different things a person can be, a social entrepreneur, a social implementers, and volunteers. Not everybody can be a social entrepreneur, and that's ok. The world need people to do the work of carrying out the mission of businesses or non-profits trying to implement social change. It's all valid and relevant.
Something that stood out to me this week was an assignment I had, called "Be the Change" which required me to reflect on where I fit in the different areas of social innovation. It caused me to realize that I want to do a lot more in my life to help people. I used to work for a non-profit that helped disabled children, I got to work one on one with these kids and help them build life skills. I miss the feeling of purpose that occupation brought me. I work a desk job now, which I love, but it's not the same. I also realized during this assignment that I do a lot more volunteer work than I thought. Which made me happy because I always feel like I should be doing more.
Now, here's a question I have to answer this week:
What connections do you see between Jeffrey Thompson’s article, The Gospel, and social innovation?
Honestly I see many connections in Thompson's article. He talks about how the Lord asks us to be "anxiously engaged in a good cause", and social innovation is all about doing good. Surely being a social entrepreneur would count. Thompson also talks about how we need to pray and work to discover our spiritual gifts. Frankly I completely agree with this sentiment because what better way is there to participate in social innovation than to use your talents to further the work of achieving social goals. Even as a volunteer, knowing that you're good at organization or good with people or something else can help you find the best way to serve those around you.
